Styling a French pop band

In 2018 I worked on the branding and styling of a French pop band called BEL AIR.

You can listen to their music here .

I really love their music which makes me think of Metronomy or Arcade Fire with beautiful & poetic French lyrics. I enjoyed working on their wardrobe/style and I’m happy to share my moodboards* here.

*Please don’t use them without my approval. Thank you.

For my non-French friends here, their lyrics talk about dreams, travels, the sea and emotions.

This was the general inspirations and color scheme for their branding + wardrobe

In Bel Air’s music, there is a feeling of sweet nostalgia that remind us of the 1960s and a certain subculture. The guys of the band wear clothes that reminded me of the Mods or Les Yéyés in France so I made a board that would give them an idea of the typical vestiaire of these young subcultures and how to use these wardrobe codes.

Bel Air’s music is all about the call of the sea, escaping our world and going for new adventures. I tried to express these ideas through clothes but with a youthful - almost nerdy- look.

The music of Bel Air talks about being young, playful and care-free… here is how I transcribed these concepts into clothing. I also wanted to challenge the idea of the typical masculinity. There is something sweet and emotional in their music that goes beyond the typical boys band.

Being French is part of the identity of Bel Air so I thought that using stripes “la marinière” in their branding could be a good visual reference and a way to play with the cliché. This is also another reference of the sea, boats, the gay culture (JP Gautier)…

I then transcribed the mood boards into 4 shopping lists for each of the member of the band. I think it’s important that each of them keep their own personality.
